ChÒteau du Cèdre is a Cahors estate at Vire-sur-Lot in south-west France, run by brothers Pascal and Jean-Marc Verhaeghe. The estate works around 27 hectares of Malbec — the variety locally called Côt or Auxerrois, and the dominant red of Cahors AOC since the appellation was established in 1971.

Bottle questions

Before you open it.

A few practical answers for storage, delivery, and choosing the right bottle.

How should I store it before opening?

Keep it somewhere cool, dark, and steady. Wine prefers cellar temperature; spirits are happier away from heat and direct sunlight.

How long will it keep once opened?

Wine changes quickly after opening; spirits and liqueurs generally hold longer if capped tightly and kept out of heat. If it is a special bottle, ask before opening and the team can give product-specific guidance.

Can I ask for a similar bottle?

Yes. Contact Caravan with this bottle name and the occasion; the team can suggest a close match, a safer gift, or a step up or down in price.

How is it packed for delivery?

Orders are packed in bottle-safe cartons. If anything arrives damaged or looks wrong, contact the team with your order number and a photo so they can sort the next step.

What about hot weather shipping?

The team avoids making one-size-fits-all promises around heat and carrier timing. For heat-sensitive or cellar bottles, contact Caravan before ordering and they can advise the safest dispatch window.

Why Caravan backs ChÒteau du Cèdre

South-West France

ChÒteau du Cèdre is widely regarded as the leading estate in Cahors. Its history starts with Léon Verhaeghe, who left Flanders for south-west France in the early 1900s. His son Charles and Charles's wife Marie-Thérèse started a mixed farm in 1958 and began planting a hectare of vines in three different plots every year. Their sons Pascal and Jean-Marc, both qualified oenologists, built the reputation, and Jules Verhaeghe makes the wine today.

Twenty-seven hectares are farmed near Bru, at Vire-sur-Lot west of Cahors, most of it on the prime third and fourth terraces. Twenty-five hectares are red, 95 per cent Malbec with a little Merlot and Tannat, and two hectares are white: Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, SΓ©millon and a touch of Muscadelle. Yields are held to 30 hectolitres per hectare and the estate is certified organic.

Fruit is hand-picked and sorted in the vineyard, then de-stemmed and fermented on indigenous yeasts for up to thirty days on skins at no more than 28Β°C. No sulphur is used during the Γ©levage, with only a tiny amount at bottling for some wines. Malolactic fermentation happens in barrel for the oak-aged cuvΓ©es, which spend twenty to twenty-four months mostly in large-format oak with only a small percentage new. Pascal Verhaeghe was the driving force behind the Cahors Quality Charter, and the estate has done as much as anyone to show what Malbec can do in its original home. About 9,000 dozen a year.
