What it tastes like.

A celebration of Oregon’s legendary brewing culture, this whiskey honors our brewing roots and grew out of our longstanding cask-trading tradition Northwest craft beer producers.

For as long as we’ve been making whiskey, we’ve traded our freshly-emptied barrels with some of our brewing collaborators. They have in turn “seasoned” them with Stout before returning them again. Our Stout Cask Finish pushes the boundaries of flavor. It begins with our Westward American Single Malt, and is then aged for one year in Stout casks.

Westward is an American Single Malt distillery in Portland, Oregon, founded in 2004 by brewer-turned-distiller Christian Krogstad and Thomas Mooney. The whiskey is twice-distilled in copper pot stills and matured in new American oak.

Why Caravan backs Westward Whiskey

Oregon

Christian Krogstad and Thomas Mooney founded Westward in Portland, Oregon, in 2004. Krogstad came out of Oregon's craft brewing scene — head brewer at McMenamins' Edgefield Brewery, founder of Orchard Street Brewing in Bellingham — and built Westward's process from the brewing side: the whiskey is mashed and fermented as an American Pale Ale before distillation, using locally-malted Pacific Northwest barley and ale yeast at low fermentation temperatures.
