What it tastes like.

Crafted from 60-year-old vines, this Chiroubles showcases a striking deep purple-black core with ruby edges. The bouquet bursts with layered complexity—dark morello and sour cherry, ripe strawberry, earthy incense, and Provençal herbs meld with subtle spice. On the palate, rich cherry and strawberry fruits take centre stage, underpinned by earthy mineral notes and a satisfying mid-weight structure. Fine, slightly grainy tannins frame a vibrant, spice-driven finish brimming with juicy red fruit character. Best enjoyed over the next 4–5 years.

Why Caravan backs Domaine Metrat & Fils

Beaujolais

The Metrat family home and winery stand in the middle of La Roilette, the most highly regarded corner of Fleurie. The family has been in the village for generations; the domaine took its present form in 2008 under Bernard Metrat, having previously been André Metrat.

La Roilette lies towards the bottom of the slope, close to the Moulin-à-Vent boundary, and the soil there has a base of clay beneath the decomposed pink granite typical of the area. That clay is why these wines carry more depth and structure than most Fleurie, and why they repay keeping rather than being drunk in the spring after the vintage. The old-vine cuvée has a little more dimension and finesse again than the regular bottling.

Nine hectares are farmed across Chiroubles, Fleurie La Roilette, Morgon Terre d'Alazarine and Moulin-à-Vent Le Belle Coudrière, planted at 9,000 vines to the hectare. Crop levels are kept low, fruit is hand-harvested, and whole bunches are fermented on natural yeasts in large concrete vats. Up to 85 per cent of the wine is aged in concrete and stainless steel, with as much as 15 per cent of the top cuvées in barrels of three to ten years of age. The estate is certified Terra Vitis and makes around 3,750 dozen.
