Moreau & Fils, to the Boisset group. Why Caravan backs Christian Moreau

Chablis

Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils is one of the oldest and most respected names in Chablis, this branch of the Moreau family headed by Christian and now by his son Fabien, who manages the estate and makes the wine.

Twelve hectares are farmed, and the quality of the holdings is remarkable for an estate this size: nearly eight hectares of Grand Cru out of the appellation's ninety-two in total. That includes three hectares of Les Clos, a hectare of Valmur, half a hectare of VaudΓ©sir, a fifth of a hectare of Blanchot and the 0.41-hectare Clos des Hospices within Les Clos. Below that sit 4.7 hectares of premier cru Vaillon, 1.2 hectares of Chablis in Les Pargues and a little under a hectare of Petit Chablis. Many of these parcels carry vines of forty to seventy years and more.

Fruit is picked by hand and whole-bunch pressed, fermented on natural yeasts and raised in stainless steel, with about a third of the premier and Grand Cru wines aged in barrel of which a tenth is new each year. The vineyards are certified organic and biodynamic conversion has begun on some Grand Cru plots. Average production is around 7,000 cases, though frost has taken 60 to 80 per cent of the crop in some recent vintages.
