Birra Ichnusa has been brewed in Sardinia since 1912, taking its name from the ancient Greek word for the island. The lager is produced at a brewery in Assemini near Cagliari using local barley and Sardinian water. Heineken acquired the brand in 1986. Ichnusa remains the dominant beer brand in Sardinia and is distributed to Italian expatriate markets internationally.

Birra Ichnusa was founded in 1912 in Assemini in southern Sardinia, by Amsicora Capra. Sardinia's ancient Greek name was Ichnusa (""footprint""), the shape of the island as the Greeks saw it on a Mediterranean map. The brewery is the only major brewery still operating on the island and produces a clean, light Italian-style lager that is a near-ubiquitous draught beer in Sardinian bars and restaurants.
