Antonio Benedetto Carpano was a distiller in Turin who, in 1786, took white wine and added an infusion of herbs and spices built on wormwood. In doing so he invented modern vermouth — and with it the whole idea of the aperitivo. He worked from a shop near the Royal Palace and sent a basket to King Vittorio Amedeo III, who liked it enough to take it up at court. Demand grew so quickly that the shop ended up open around the clock.

Antica Formula is still made to that original recipe, and it tastes like nothing else on the shelf: dark and thick, heavy with saffron, dried fruit and vanilla over a firm bitter edge. Punt e Mes is the house's other classic, a more bitter style whose name is Piedmontese for "a point and a half". Both are made today by Fratelli Branca in Milan.
