About Shut the Gate.

Clare Valley (Watervale) ·Est. 2007

Shut the Gate Wines was founded in 2007 in the Clare Valley by Richard Woods and Rasa Fabian, after both spent years in commercial wine roles before launching their own venture. The cellar door operates from a historic cottage at the entrance to Watervale village. The wine focus is Clare Valley Riesling — single-vineyard expressions from Watervale and Polish Hill River — alongside Italian-varietal experiments (Fiano, Gewürztraminer, Sangiovese, Negroamaro, Barbera) and small-batch Grenache and Shiraz.

Bottle questions

Before you open it.

A few practical answers for storage, delivery, and choosing the right bottle.

How should I store it before opening?

Keep it somewhere cool, dark, and steady. Wine prefers cellar temperature; spirits are happier away from heat and direct sunlight.

How long will it keep once opened?

Wine changes quickly after opening; spirits and liqueurs generally hold longer if capped tightly and kept out of heat. If it is a special bottle, ask before opening and the team can give product-specific guidance.

Can I ask for a similar bottle?

Yes. Contact Caravan with this bottle name and the occasion; the team can suggest a close match, a safer gift, or a step up or down in price.

How is it packed for delivery?

Orders are packed in bottle-safe cartons. If anything arrives damaged or looks wrong, contact the team with your order number and a photo so they can sort the next step.

What about hot weather shipping?

The team avoids making one-size-fits-all promises around heat and carrier timing. For heat-sensitive or cellar bottles, contact Caravan before ordering and they can advise the safest dispatch window.

Why Caravan backs Shut the Gate

Clare Valley (Watervale)

Richard Woods and Rasa Fabian founded Shut the Gate in 2007 after both spent years in commercial wine industry roles. The pair purchased a small Clare Valley vineyard and a 100-tonne contract winery, and spent five years relaunching that earlier label before establishing Shut the Gate as their own brand. The Watervale cottage that now serves as cellar door sits at the entrance to the Watervale village in the southern Clare Valley.

The Clare Valley's Watervale and Polish Hill River subregions are the spine of the Shut the Gate Riesling line — Watervale produces softer fruit-forward wines and Polish Hill the more austere mineral expressions. The For Love Watervale Riesling won Adelaide Review's Hot 100 Wines in 2019. Beyond Riesling, the house experiments with Italian and Mediterranean varieties (Fiano, Gewürztraminer, Sangiovese, Negroamaro, Barbera) alongside the standard South Australian Grenache and Shiraz.
