What it tastes like.

Nivarius is the Rioja white-wine specialist, working exclusively with Spain's native white grapes from high-altitude vineyards. Tempranillo Blanco is the rare white mutation of Spain's most famous red — first discovered in 1988 and only allowed in Rioja from 2007 — and Nivarius is one of the few producers championing it at a serious level.

The 2024 vintage is the latest release. Expect a yellow-straw colour with green reflections, and a complex, medium-intensity nose of white fruit, white flowers, fennel and a balsamic touch. The palate is full and glycerol-textured, with a long, slightly bitter, vertical finish that lengthens nicely. Fermented in 3,500-litre French oak foudres and aged on fine lees with battonage for seven months. Sourced from El Arca vineyard, Nalda, at 800m altitude on clay-calcareous soils.

Pair with grilled white fish, roast poultry or hard cheese.

The house

About Nivarius.

Nivarius is a Rioja winery founded in 2013 in the Rioja Alta subzone. The name references snow (from Latin nivarius), evoking the Sierra Cantabria mountains above the vineyards. The range focuses on single-parcel Tempranillo, Tempranillo Blanco and Garnacha Blanca, targeting site-specific expression rather than broad appellation blending.

Bottle questions

Before you open it.

A few practical answers for storage, delivery, and choosing the right bottle.

How should I store it before opening?

Keep it somewhere cool, dark, and steady. Wine prefers cellar temperature; spirits are happier away from heat and direct sunlight.

How long will it keep once opened?

Wine changes quickly after opening; spirits and liqueurs generally hold longer if capped tightly and kept out of heat. If it is a special bottle, ask before opening and the team can give product-specific guidance.

Can I ask for a similar bottle?

Yes. Contact Caravan with this bottle name and the occasion; the team can suggest a close match, a safer gift, or a step up or down in price.

How is it packed for delivery?

Orders are packed in bottle-safe cartons. If anything arrives damaged or looks wrong, contact the team with your order number and a photo so they can sort the next step.

What about hot weather shipping?

The team avoids making one-size-fits-all promises around heat and carrier timing. For heat-sensitive or cellar bottles, contact Caravan before ordering and they can advise the safest dispatch window.

Why Caravan backs Nivarius

Rioja

White Rioja from Tempranillo Blanco — a natural mutation discovered in a Tempranillo vineyard in 2000 — is a relatively recent category, but Nivarius has positioned itself specifically around this variety alongside the more traditional Viura. The estate's vineyards in Hormilla in the western Rioja Alta sit at altitude, with the Sierra Cantabria providing a cool northern influence. Winemaking emphasises freshness and aromatic complexity rather than oxidative ageing in the traditional Rioja Blanco style.
