Why Caravan backs Marcel Couturier

Mâconnais, Burgundy

Marcel Couturier made his first vintage in 2005 at Fuissé, in the southern Mâconnais — the warm bottom end of Burgundy, where Chardonnay ripens more generously than it does further north. He has grown the estate to 32 hectares and now works it with his children Cladie and Auxence.

The vineyards straddle a geological fault, which is why the wines vary so much from one bottling to the next. Sandstone and schist parcels give the floral, open wines you can drink tonight; the older limestone and clay sections give the ones worth keeping. Mâcon-Fuissé comes off schist from vines over fifty years old. The Pouilly-Fuissé ‘Clos Scellés’ is picked from vines between fifty and ninety years old.

Auxence has led the move to organic farming from 2018 and biodynamics from 2019, with full biodynamic certification in 2022. The compost is made on the property, every grape is picked by hand, and the winery has run partly on its own solar power since 2019.

The wines spend about eleven months in French oak before bottling.
