"Carlos Cañas began selling Rioja wines in bulk in the early twentieth century, transporting them by mule and cart through the Álava province. His son Luis Cañas (born 1928) shifted the family business toward bottled wine, beginning with cosechero-style young reds in 1970 and moving progressively into the Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva tiers that define Rioja Alavesa.
