What it tastes like.

An appealing golden colour, with an amber rim. Elegant and complex, it shows aromas of spice, with prevailing notes of dried fruit and elegant hints of wood and honey. Smooth and round on the palate, it shows complexity amidst intense flavours of dried fruit. An excellent finish.

About Kopke.

Douro (Quinta de São Luiz, Tabuaço ·Est. 1638

Kopke is the oldest Port Wine house in the world, founded in 1638 by Nicolau Kopke and his son Cristiano — Hanseatic League representatives newly arrived in Portugal — as a Porto trading house. The first wine shipments date to 1638; vineyard acquisition in the Douro followed in 1781. Kopke acquired Quinta de São Luiz at Tabuaço in 1922, which remains the production base. Since 2006 the house has operated under the Sogevinus group, alongside Burmester, CÑlem and other Port houses.

Bottle questions

Before you open it.

A few practical answers for storage, delivery, and choosing the right bottle.

How should I store it before opening?

Keep it somewhere cool, dark, and steady. Wine prefers cellar temperature; spirits are happier away from heat and direct sunlight.

How long will it keep once opened?

Wine changes quickly after opening; spirits and liqueurs generally hold longer if capped tightly and kept out of heat. If it is a special bottle, ask before opening and the team can give product-specific guidance.

Can I ask for a similar bottle?

Yes. Contact Caravan with this bottle name and the occasion; the team can suggest a close match, a safer gift, or a step up or down in price.

How is it packed for delivery?

Orders are packed in bottle-safe cartons. If anything arrives damaged or looks wrong, contact the team with your order number and a photo so they can sort the next step.

What about hot weather shipping?

The team avoids making one-size-fits-all promises around heat and carrier timing. For heat-sensitive or cellar bottles, contact Caravan before ordering and they can advise the safest dispatch window.

Why Caravan backs Kopke

Douro (Quinta de São Luiz, Tabuaço

Nicolau Kopke and his son Cristiano arrived in Portugal as representatives of the Hanseatic League in the 1630s and established the Kopke trading house in 1638. The first wine shipments under the Kopke name date to that founding year β€” making Kopke the oldest continuously-active Port Wine house. For more than a century the firm operated as a nΓ©gociant trader, sourcing wine from Douro growers; in 1781 the family purchased its first Douro vineyards, transitioning from trading house to estate producer. Kopke's continued operation across nearly four centuries spans the major Port-trade transitions, from English-market dominance to modern global distribution.

In 1922 Kopke acquired Quinta de São Luiz at Tabuaço, on the left bank of the Douro between Régua and Pinhão. The Quinta serves as the production estate and the home of the Kopke vintage and Colheita programs. Since 2006 the house has been owned by the Sogevinus Fine Wines group, a Portuguese conglomerate that also owns Burmester, CÑlem and other Port houses. The Kopke range covers Fine Tawny, White Port, LBV (Late Bottled Vintage), Vintage Port, and the long-aged Colheita line — single-vintage Tawny Ports aged in cask for decades before bottling, an expression Kopke is particularly identified with.
