About Fernando de Castilla.

Jerez (Andalusia) Β·Est. 1837

Bodega Rey Fernando de Castilla is a Jerez sherry and brandy house founded in 1837 by the Andrada-Vanderwilde family, who had supplied grapes and wine to the Jerez sherry trade for two centuries before turning to bottling under their own name. The house added Brandy de Jerez to its production from 1956. In 1999 the bodega was acquired by Norwegian Jan Pettersen β€” formerly fifteen years at Osborne β€” who has since revitalised production focused on traditional sherry methods.

Bottle questions

Before you open it.

A few practical answers for storage, delivery, and choosing the right bottle.

How should I store it before opening?

Keep it somewhere cool, dark, and steady. Wine prefers cellar temperature; spirits are happier away from heat and direct sunlight.

How long will it keep once opened?

Wine changes quickly after opening; spirits and liqueurs generally hold longer if capped tightly and kept out of heat. If it is a special bottle, ask before opening and the team can give product-specific guidance.

Can I ask for a similar bottle?

Yes. Contact Caravan with this bottle name and the occasion; the team can suggest a close match, a safer gift, or a step up or down in price.

How is it packed for delivery?

Orders are packed in bottle-safe cartons. If anything arrives damaged or looks wrong, contact the team with your order number and a photo so they can sort the next step.

What about hot weather shipping?

The team avoids making one-size-fits-all promises around heat and carrier timing. For heat-sensitive or cellar bottles, contact Caravan before ordering and they can advise the safest dispatch window.

Why Caravan backs Fernando de Castilla

Jerez (Andalusia)

The Andrada-Vanderwilde family founded Bodega Fernando III (later renamed Fernando de Castilla) in Jerez in 1837. The family had been supplying grapes and base wine to the Jerez sherry trade for around two centuries before deciding to bottle and market under their own name. The Andrada-Vanderwilde aristocratic line provided the bodega with both vineyard depth and the social network needed for the heavily relationship-driven sherry export trade. In 1956 the house added Brandy de Jerez to its production line; the Rey Fernando de Castilla trademark was registered in 1969.

In 1972 Fernando Andrada-Vanderwilde took over old sherry cellars and brandy soleras from neighbouring bodegas, consolidating the house's production base. In 1999 the bodega was sold to Jan Pettersen, a Norwegian sherry specialist who had spent fifteen years at Osborne. Pettersen took over the adjacent cellars of sherry shipper JosΓ© Bustamante and revitalised the house. The current range covers the full sherry style spectrum β€” Fino, Amontillado, Oloroso, Palo Cortado, Pedro XimΓ©nez β€” plus the Brandy de Jerez Solera and Solera Gran Reserva expressions.
