About Chateau Saint-Georges.

Bordeaux Β·Est. 1891

ChΓ’teau Saint-Georges is a Bordeaux estate in Saint-Georges–Saint-Γ‰milion, a satellite appellation adjoining Saint-Γ‰milion. The chΓ’teau was built in 1774, designed by Victor Louis, the architect of the Bordeaux Grand ThéÒtre. The estate covers approximately 60 hectares of Merlot-dominant vineyards on limestone and clay soils north of the Saint-Γ‰milion plateau.

Bottle questions

Before you open it.

A few practical answers for storage, delivery, and choosing the right bottle.

How should I store it before opening?

Keep it somewhere cool, dark, and steady. Wine prefers cellar temperature; spirits are happier away from heat and direct sunlight.

How long will it keep once opened?

Wine changes quickly after opening; spirits and liqueurs generally hold longer if capped tightly and kept out of heat. If it is a special bottle, ask before opening and the team can give product-specific guidance.

Can I ask for a similar bottle?

Yes. Contact Caravan with this bottle name and the occasion; the team can suggest a close match, a safer gift, or a step up or down in price.

How is it packed for delivery?

Orders are packed in bottle-safe cartons. If anything arrives damaged or looks wrong, contact the team with your order number and a photo so they can sort the next step.

What about hot weather shipping?

The team avoids making one-size-fits-all promises around heat and carrier timing. For heat-sensitive or cellar bottles, contact Caravan before ordering and they can advise the safest dispatch window.

Why Caravan backs Chateau Saint-Georges

Bordeaux

There has been a estate here since Gallo-Roman times, once covering a thousand arpents, around 263 hectares, which is roughly the whole parish of Saint-Georges. Henri IV sold the chÒteau and its land to Jean Barbot in October 1602 for 1,500 pounds, a purchase that came with the title of Baron. The last Baron of Saint-Georges commissioned Victor Louis, the neo-classical architect behind the Grand ThéÒtre in Bordeaux, to rebuild the feudal chÒteau in 1772, keeping its four corner towers.

The Revolution spared the building but phylloxera destroyed the vines, and the estate passed through several hands until PΓ©trus Desbois bought it in November 1891 as a summer residence and set about grafting the French vines onto American rootstock. It has been a private family home and vineyard ever since. His son, also PΓ©trus, took over in 1945 and it was under him that the wine made its name; Georges Desbois presides today.

Forty-five hectares are farmed as a single parcel on the main south-facing slope of Saint-Georges-Saint-Γ‰milion, planted at 5,500 vines to the hectare and, like all Bordeaux, never irrigated. Fruit is rigorously sorted before de-stemming, cold-soaked at 10 to 12Β°C and fermented in stainless steel at relatively low temperature, then aged twelve to fourteen months in barrel with around 30 per cent new oak. The wines are balanced and elegant, and known for ageing well. Production is about 27,500 dozen.
