About Saint James.

Sainte-Marie (north-east Atlantic coast) ·Est. 1765

Rhum Saint James is a Martinique rhum agricole producer dating to 1765, when Father Edmond Lefébure converted the Habitation Trou Vaillant — a sugar refinery purchased in 1714 by the Fathers of Charity — to rum production. The distillery sits at Sainte-Marie on Martinique's north-east Atlantic coast, on volcanic soils enriched by Mount Pelée's ash. Rémy Cointreau sold the brand to La Martiniquaise in 2003. Saint James operates under the protected Rhum Agricole Martinique AOC, distilling fresh-pressed sugarcane juice rather than molasses.

Bottle questions

Before you open it.

A few practical answers for storage, delivery, and choosing the right bottle.

How should I store it before opening?

Keep it somewhere cool, dark, and steady. Wine prefers cellar temperature; spirits are happier away from heat and direct sunlight.

How long will it keep once opened?

Wine changes quickly after opening; spirits and liqueurs generally hold longer if capped tightly and kept out of heat. If it is a special bottle, ask before opening and the team can give product-specific guidance.

Can I ask for a similar bottle?

Yes. Contact Caravan with this bottle name and the occasion; the team can suggest a close match, a safer gift, or a step up or down in price.

How is it packed for delivery?

Orders are packed in bottle-safe cartons. If anything arrives damaged or looks wrong, contact the team with your order number and a photo so they can sort the next step.

What about hot weather shipping?

The team avoids making one-size-fits-all promises around heat and carrier timing. For heat-sensitive or cellar bottles, contact Caravan before ordering and they can advise the safest dispatch window.

Why Caravan backs Saint James

Martinique

Saint James prints the date 1765 on every bottle - the year Father Edmond Lefebure, a Catholic priest running the Trou-Vaillant sugar refinery in northern Martinique, decided his estate's tafia (the early Caribbean precursor to rum) was good enough to bottle and ship. The name went on the export labels because "Saint James" read better in the English-speaking colonies than the actual estate name. Two and a half centuries later it's still on the front of every bottle, making Saint James the oldest dated rum brand in the world.

The square bottle is the second signature. Paul Lefebure designed it in 1882 so cases could be packed flush on transatlantic crossings without breakage - a working tool that became the brand's silhouette and never changed. The distillery is now in Sainte-Marie on Martinique's Atlantic coast, where the volcanic soil from Mont Pelee's ashfall feeds particularly aromatic cane. Production runs under the AOC Martinique framework: fresh-pressed cane juice only, no molasses, double-column distillation, traceable by parcel and harvest. The working agricole range covers the Rhum Agricole Blanc 40% (Ti'Punch and cocktail base), the Royal Ambre 45% (the everyday aged expression), and the 12-Year (the showcase).

Drink the white in a Ti'Punch (rum, lime, cane syrup, ice) - the classic Martinique serve. The Royal Ambre takes a single rock or a splash of water; the 12-Year is a neat sipper. Saint James sits next to Depaz on the same AOC framework but reads different on palate: where Depaz is structured and oak-forward, Saint James leans grassier and more aromatic - the difference between the western volcanic flank and the Atlantic-side estate.
