What it tastes like.

This 100% Agave EspadΓn is distilled by Emigdio JarquΓn in El Nanche, MiahuatlΓ‘n de Porfirio Diaz. Don Emigdio is a fourth-generation mezcalero from the Nanche district of MiahuatlΓ‘n. This Mezcal was awarded Double Gold, Best in Class & the coveted "Best Mezcal" at the 2019 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The terroir shines through in this mezcal, and you really get a sense of place when tasting it.Β Tasting Notes:Β A well-balanced smokiness and bright citrus flavours make it distinct. Complex, opulent, and delicious to sip.Β This mezcal is a magnificent sipping mezcal, yet has become a favourite ingredient in craft cocktails as well.

About Mezcal Vago.

Oaxaca (multi-palenque: Candelaria YegolΓ© Β·Est. 2012

Mezcal Vago is an Oaxacan mezcal brand founded in 2012 by maestro mezcalero Aquilino GarcΓa with co-founders Judah Kuper and Dylan Sloan. The brand operates as a multi-maestro collective: four mezcaleros β€” Aquilino GarcΓa in Candelaria YegolΓ© (now succeeded by his sons Temo and Mateo), SalomΓ³n Rey Rodriguez ('TΓo Rey') in Sola de Vega, Emigdio JarquΓn RamΓrez and Joel Barriga β€” each work distinct agave varieties under their own production styles. The GarcΓa family has distilled mezcal artisanally for at least five generations.

Bottle questions

Before you open it.

A few practical answers for storage, delivery, and choosing the right bottle.

How should I store it before opening?

Keep it somewhere cool, dark, and steady. Wine prefers cellar temperature; spirits are happier away from heat and direct sunlight.

How long will it keep once opened?

Wine changes quickly after opening; spirits and liqueurs generally hold longer if capped tightly and kept out of heat. If it is a special bottle, ask before opening and the team can give product-specific guidance.

Can I ask for a similar bottle?

Yes. Contact Caravan with this bottle name and the occasion; the team can suggest a close match, a safer gift, or a step up or down in price.

How is it packed for delivery?

Orders are packed in bottle-safe cartons. If anything arrives damaged or looks wrong, contact the team with your order number and a photo so they can sort the next step.

What about hot weather shipping?

The team avoids making one-size-fits-all promises around heat and carrier timing. For heat-sensitive or cellar bottles, contact Caravan before ordering and they can advise the safest dispatch window.

Why Caravan backs Mezcal Vago

Oaxaca (multi-palenque: Candelaria YegolΓ©, Sola de Vega, others)

Mezcal Vago began in 2012 when Judah Kuper, on a visit to a hospital in Oaxaca, met a nurse whose father β€” Aquilino GarcΓa β€” was a subsistence farmer in the remote mountain village of Candelaria YegolΓ© who also distilled mezcal. Judah and his partner Dylan Sloan teamed up with Aquilino to commercialise the family mezcal. The GarcΓa family had been making artisanal mezcal for at least five generations across the same palenque (mezcal-distillation site). Aquilino's sons Temo and Mateo GarcΓa now run the family side of the operation; Aquilino has stepped back from active production.

Vago expanded beyond the original GarcΓa family operation to a multi-maestro model. Three other mezcaleros now contribute their own distinct production styles to the brand: SalomΓ³n Rey Rodriguez ('TΓo Rey') in Sola de Vega (about 2.5 hours south of Oaxaca City), who distils in clay pots and cultivates five agave varieties including agave Tobala (which takes 18 years to mature); Emigdio JarquΓn RamΓrez; and Joel Barriga. Each maestro's mezcals are bottled separately, with the maestro's name and palenque identified on every label.
