What it tastes like.

Domaine Cauhapé Jurançon Sec Geyser 2020
30 % Gros Manseng, 30 % Petit Manseng, 30 % Camaralet, 5 % Lauzet and 5 % Courbu Blanc, crushed and destemmed then macerated on skins for 12 hours before pressing. Cool-fermented in stainless steel and matured on lees for 5 months.

The nose displays beautiful complexity and freshness, evoking citrus and exotic fruit notes, along with hints of pepper and fennel from the old varieties, Camaralet and Lauzet. In the mouth, there is lovely volume and complexity with flavours of yellow-peach and exotic tropical fruits leading to a long, textural finish of excellent persistence and refreshing acidity.

About Cauhape.

Domaine Cauhapé is a Jurançon AOC estate in the French Pyrenees, founded by Henri Ramonteu in 1980. The estate works Petit Manseng and Gros Manseng on steep, south-facing slopes above the Gave de Pau river valley. Cauhapé produces both dry Jurançon Sec and late-harvest sweet Jurançon; its Quintessence du Petit Manseng is one of the appellation's most concentrated sweet whites, made from over-ripened, hand-harvested Petit Manseng bunches.

Why Caravan backs Cauhape

The Jurançon AOC sits south of Pau in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, where the grapes — principally Gros and Petit Manseng — benefit from the Foehn wind that desiccates the berries in autumn, concentrating sugars for the Moelleux (sweet) wines. Henri Ramonteu manages a substantial holding across the appellation, farming a mix of south-facing hillside terraces and plateau parcels. The dry Sec wines are fermented to complete dryness; the Moelleux expressions see multiple passes through the vineyard as individual grape bunches reach the desired level of passerillage.
