Eigashima Shuzo started making sake and shochu at Akashi, on the coast of Hyลgo between Kobe and the Seto Inland Sea, in 1888. As imported Scotch caught on in Japan, the company applied for a licence to distil whisky and received it in 1919 โ€” the first granted in the country. The distillery as it stands today was built in 1984, when whisky finally became a serious part of the business.

It remains small, and the whisky is still made with the same underground water the house uses for its sake. You'll see it under the Akashi, White Oak and Tokinoka names โ€” light, clean, easygoing whisky from a producer that has been at it, in one form or another, for well over a century.
