Producer profile

Arthur Dillon was a young count of Irish descent who arrived in Martinique in 1779 after serving in the American Revolutionary War. He married an heiress from a planting family and took on the Girardin estate, where cane had been grown since 1690. Sugar came first; rum only became the business in the nineteenth century, and a new distillery was built on the site in 1928.

Dillon still farms its own cane and the rums carry the AOC Martinique appellation, granted in 1996. These days the cane is distilled up the coast at Depaz, but the rum comes home to Fort-de-France to age and be bottled, on the same ground the estate has occupied since the eighteenth century.
