Distillerie Bielle

Marie-Galante is a small, almost-perfectly-round island south of mainland Guadeloupe - locals call it "the island of 100 windmills" for the stone mills that once dotted every cane field. Three distilleries still work the island. Bielle, founded in 1769, is one of them and one of the oldest names in agricole rhum still in production. The house has been family-owned through the Damoiseau line since 1976.

Marie-Galante rhum sits outside the AOC Martinique framework - it's still Guadeloupe rhum agricole, fresh cane juice base, but bottled to a different tradition: higher proof, less filtration, more of the cane left intact. Bielle's working range starts at 40% (the Anita Blanc, the soft entry) and runs through 50%+ vintage releases that read closer to a high-ester pot-still rum than a polite agricole. The Anita Blanc 40% is the everyday base; the Bielle 2003 52.8% vintage is the showcase - a single-vintage release with cellar age and the weightier, fuller-textured Marie-Galante signature.

Drink the Anita Blanc in a Ti'Punch or a Caribbean highball - the cane character is bright and the proof is friendly. The 2003 vintage sips neat at room temperature; its weight and ester profile reward a slow pour. Pair naturally on a flight with Pere Labat (the other Marie-Galante house on the same shelf) to show the Marie-Galante style cleanly contrasted against AOC Martinique.
