Rhum Barbancourt

Rhum Barbancourt has been distilled in Haiti since 1862, when Dupre Barbancourt - a Charente-born distiller - brought the Cognac method to the island and applied it to fresh sugar cane juice rather than molasses. Double distillation in copper pot stills, ageing in Limousin oak: a Caribbean spirit shaped by French technique, made from cane grown a few kilometres from where it's pressed. Five generations of the Gardere family have run the house since taking over from the founder; today it remains one of Haiti's largest export businesses and the sole rum producer working continuously through the country's modern history.

The current Domaine Barbancourt sits in the Plaine du Cul-de-Sac, a fertile plain east of Port-au-Prince, where the house has worked roughly 250 hectares of cane since the 1949 move out of the city centre. The estate runs on its own cane press, a column-then-pot distillation chain, and a temperature-controlled cellar holding stocks back to the 1980s. The 4 Year (3-star) and 8 Year (5-star, Extra Old) sit at the working heart of the range, both bottled at 43%. The 15 Year Reserve du Domaine and Estate Reserve sit further up the catalogue when allocations allow.

Drink the 4 Year in a Daiquiri or a Ti'Punch - the bright cane-juice signature still reads front of palate. The 8 Year takes on Limousin oak structure and drinks closer to a soft Cognac, neat or with a single rock. The 15 Year is a sipping pour for after dinner. Barbancourt is the cleanest reference for the Cognac-method, cane-juice tradition outside the French Caribbean AOC.
