What it tastes like.

The Carricante grapes on Etna always produce great satisfaction because the marriage between the black sand and the altitude provide structured aromas and three dimensional flavours. In this vintage we have found notes of white acacia flowers, fresh almonds and mountain peaches on the nose; on the palate juicy and full with notes of yellow plums and prickly pears.

About Planeta.

Planeta is a multi-estate Sicilian wine producer with 17 generations of family agriculture on the island. The modern winery began in the 1990s under Diego Planeta at the Ulmo estate near Menfi (the family seat since 1694) and has since expanded across five of Sicily's most distinct wine zones: Menfi, Vittoria, Noto, Mount Etna, and Capo Milazzo. The estate works only indigenous Sicilian varieties. Diego's children and cousins — Francesca, Alessio (winemaker) and Santi — now lead the operation.

Bottle questions

Before you open it.

A few practical answers for storage, delivery, and choosing the right bottle.

How should I store it before opening?

Keep it somewhere cool, dark, and steady. Wine prefers cellar temperature; spirits are happier away from heat and direct sunlight.

How long will it keep once opened?

Wine changes quickly after opening; spirits and liqueurs generally hold longer if capped tightly and kept out of heat. If it is a special bottle, ask before opening and the team can give product-specific guidance.

Can I ask for a similar bottle?

Yes. Contact Caravan with this bottle name and the occasion; the team can suggest a close match, a safer gift, or a step up or down in price.

How is it packed for delivery?

Orders are packed in bottle-safe cartons. If anything arrives damaged or looks wrong, contact the team with your order number and a photo so they can sort the next step.

What about hot weather shipping?

The team avoids making one-size-fits-all promises around heat and carrier timing. For heat-sensitive or cellar bottles, contact Caravan before ordering and they can advise the safest dispatch window.

Why Caravan backs Planeta

Sicily (multi-region: Menfi, Vittoria, Noto

The Planeta family's agricultural presence in Sicily traces back through 17 generations to a 1694 wedding dowry that brought the original 'baglia' (stone farmhouse) at Menfi into the family. Modern wine production under the Planeta label began in the 1990s, when Diego Planeta — by then a senior figure in Sicilian agriculture — established the contemporary winery at the Ulmo estate near Menfi. Diego's nephew Alessio Planeta (now the winemaker) trained under Diego and the influential Italian oenologist Giacomo Tachis, the consultant behind the Sassicaia and Tignanello Super-Tuscans.

From the original Menfi base, Planeta has progressively extended across Sicily, recognising that the island contains multiple distinct wine regions rather than a single homogeneous one. Vittoria came next, then Noto in the south-east, Mount Etna's volcanic slopes, and Capo Milazzo on the north-east coast. Each estate works the indigenous variety best suited to that terroir: Nero d'Avola at Noto, Nerello Mascalese on Etna, Cerasuolo di Vittoria's Nero d'Avola-Frappato blend at Vittoria, Carricante (white) on Etna, Grillo and Catarratto at Menfi. Today Diego's children and cousins — Francesca, Alessio and Santi — manage the operation as the seventeenth generation.
