Clos des Papes is a Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate founded in 1896 by Paul Avril; the Avril family has been settled in the village since 1600. Paul Avril helped draft the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC regulations enacted in 1936, the first AOC in France. Paul-Vincent Avril runs the estate today.

Why Caravan backs Clos des Papes

"The Avril family has been settled in Châteauneuf-du-Pape since around 1600, and Paul Avril founded the Clos des Papes wine label in 1896. Paul Avril was instrumental in drafting the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation regulations: he convened a commission at the village's town hall in 1911 to set down the basis of the AOC, which was enacted in 1936 and became the first appellation contrôlée in France.
