What it tastes like.

Sambuca DiAnisè is the recreated original recipe used by Berta in the nineteen fifties. The delicate aroma of anise surrounds the selection of sugar and alcohol that characterise this fine liquor. Perfect as an aperitif or after-dinner drink.

About Berta.

Piedmont (Mombaruzzo, Monferrato) ·Est. 1947

Distilleria Berta was founded in 1947 by Paolo Berta in Nizza Monferrato, Piedmont, building on a family wine-growing line that ran back to the late nineteenth century. The Berta house was the first to commercially age grappa in wood, a technique now standard at the upper end of the category. In 2002 the operation moved to Casalotto di Mombaruzzo, returning to the family's geographic roots, and now produces more than thirty grappa expressions plus seven liqueurs.

Bottle questions

Before you open it.

A few practical answers for storage, delivery, and choosing the right bottle.

How should I store it before opening?

Keep it somewhere cool, dark, and steady. Wine prefers cellar temperature; spirits are happier away from heat and direct sunlight.

How long will it keep once opened?

Wine changes quickly after opening; spirits and liqueurs generally hold longer if capped tightly and kept out of heat. If it is a special bottle, ask before opening and the team can give product-specific guidance.

Can I ask for a similar bottle?

Yes. Contact Caravan with this bottle name and the occasion; the team can suggest a close match, a safer gift, or a step up or down in price.

How is it packed for delivery?

Orders are packed in bottle-safe cartons. If anything arrives damaged or looks wrong, contact the team with your order number and a photo so they can sort the next step.

What about hot weather shipping?

The team avoids making one-size-fits-all promises around heat and carrier timing. For heat-sensitive or cellar bottles, contact Caravan before ordering and they can advise the safest dispatch window.

Why Caravan backs Distillerie Berta

Piedmont (Mombaruzzo, Monferrato)

Paolo Berta and his wife Lidia opened Distilleria Berta in 1947 on the ground floor of their home in Nizza Monferrato, Piedmont. The Berta family had been involved in Piedmontese wine-growing since the late 1800s — Paolo's grandfather Francesco was a landowner and winegrower born in 1866 — but Distilleria Berta was the first formal commercial venture under the family name. Paolo's distinguishing technical contribution was being the first Italian distiller to commercially age grappa in wooden barrels, a method that lifted grappa from neutral spirit into something with structure and oxidative character; the technique is now standard for the category's top tier.

In 2002 the distillery relocated to Casalotto di Mombaruzzo, deeper into the Monferrato hills and closer to the family's original land. The current range covers more than thirty grappa expressions — single-varietal (Moscato, Barbera, Chardonnay, Nebbiolo), multi-vintage and barrel-aged blends, plus the Roccanivo, Tre Soli Tre and Bric del Gaian Reserve cuvées — and seven herbal liqueurs. Production scale is mid-tier: the house exports widely and is one of Italy's larger Italian-grappa names.
